Chinese medicine is over 3000 years old. It views the individual as a whole, a concept gaining increasing acceptance even in Western medicine. Acupuncture as one field of Chinese medicine is based on the idea that energy flows through the body along channels known as “meridians”. This energy, referred to as Qi in Chinese, reaches the skin surface at over 700 points. In a healthy body, Qi flows in harmony, whereas diseases are characterized by energetic imbalances. Acupuncture is used to restore harmony: excessive levels are cleared, low levels are replenished and blockages are unblocked to restore a smooth Qi flow.
